IPL started in 2008. The first three editions of this competition experienced knockout stages, including two Semi-Finals and one Final (Third-place playoff only in IPL 2010), to decide the ultimate winner of the trophy.
Since 2011, IPL has followed modern-day Playoffs. It consists of Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and Final.

At the end of the league stage, the top two teams in the final points table face each other in Qualifier 1. The winner of this Qualifier 1 advance to the Final, and the loser appears in Qualifier 2.
Later, Eliminator has been scheduled between the no.3 and no.4 ranked teams in the final points table of the season. The Eliminator winner moves to Qualifier 2, and the loser ultimately ends their journey in the tournament.
The winner of the Qualifier 2, where the loser of the Qualifier 1 faces the winner of the Eliminator, qualifies to the Final of the competition.
In the Final, Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 winners battle to lift the trophy. The winning side of the match ultimately celebrates with the trophy.
