On Saturday (3rd August), the mixed 4 × 400 metres relay experienced a thrilling finish, where the Dutch Femke Bol dominated the last turn to snatch the gold medal from the USA.
It was the second mixed 4 × 400 metres relay final event in the history of the Summer Olympics, which made its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
In the final race, Eugene Omalla, Lieke Klaver, Isaya Klein Ikkink, and Femke Bol participated for the Netherlands, while the world record-holder USA had Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon, and Kaylyn Brown.

Although the USA dominated in the final race, Femke Bol powered the last turn to beat the favourites and snatch the gold medal. The Netherlands secured a national record as well as an area record (a continental record) by clocking at 3:07.43 minutes.
Silver medallists USA completed the race in 3:07.74 minutes. Great Britain (Samuel Reardon, Laviai Nielsen, Alex Haydock-Wilson, and Amber Anning) finished in third place to secure the bronze medal in the mixed 4 × 400 metres relay, where they also set up a new national record (3:08.01).
The fourth-placed Belgium (Alexander Doom, Helena Ponette, Jonathan Sacoor, and Naomi Van Den Broeck) also set a national record by clocking at 3:09.36 minutes.
Defending champions Poland (Maksymilian Szwed, Justyna Święty-Ersetic, Karol Zalewski, and Alicja Wrona-Kutrzepa) finished in seventh place after clocking at 3:12.39 minutes.
The USA set the world record during the heats
The mixed 4 × 400 metres relay heats were organized on Friday (2nd August). The United States (Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon, and Kaylyn Brown) dominated in the heats and set a new world record by finishing the race in 3:07.41 minutes. Team USA also held the previous three world records in this event.
