Avinash Sable: Birth and challenging life in the Indian army
Avinash Sable was born on 13th September 1994. He was raised in Mandwa village in Maharashtra. His parents are farmers.
After completing his 12th-grade education, Avinash joined the Indian army via regular recruitment. He joined the 5 Mahar and was initially posted in Siachen glacier, where temperatures would go below -50 °C.
Later, Avinash also served in the Rajasthan desert, Lalgarh Jattan, where the maximum temperatures would move to 45 °C in the summer.
Early athletic career
Although Avinash started his cross-country athletic journey in 2015, he stopped running in 2016. However, later, he decided to restart his athletic journey. Under Amrish Kumar, the middle and long-distance coach of the army, Avinash made huge improvements and started to shine in his athletic career.
Asian Championships 2019 silver medal
In the Asian Championships 2019 in Doha, Avinash won the silver medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Just missed out on the final event
During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Avinash participated in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event. Although he set a new national record (8:18.12), he just missed qualifying for the final. He was the first Indian to participate in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event in 68 years.
Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medal
In the Commonwealth Games 2022, he secured the silver medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event.
Two medals in the Asian Games 2022
In the Asian Games 2022, Avinash won the gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event. He also won a silver medal in the men’s 5000m event.
Ten times national records in the men's 3000m steeplechase
The two-time national champion has set men’s 3000m steeplechase national records ten times. His latest national record is 8:09.91 minutes. During the Asian Games 2022, he set the Asian Games record in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event (8:19.50 minutes). Avinash also holds the national record in the men’s 5000m event and half marathon.

How did Avinash Sable qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics?
In July 2023, during the Silesia Diamond League 2023 in Poland’s Chorzow, Avinash finished sixth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event by clocking 8:11.63. As the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying standard was set at 8:15.00, the Indian athlete comfortably qualified for the Summer Olympics 2024.
