Arjun Singh Cheema’s early life
Arjun Singh Cheema was born on 13 June 2001. He is from Mandi Gobindgarh in Punjab. He is from a sports family. While he is the grandson of Sardar Balwinder Singh, a former Indian national football player, Arjun is also the nephew of Indian powerlifter Jagwinder Singh, who holds an Asian Junior Powerlifting record.
Arjun was a swimmer
In his early days, Arjun was a swimmer. He participated in the International Junior Swimming Championship 2014 in Austria. However, after learning about the huge differences in water sports training between India and other top countries, he decided to take the shooting sport seriously.
Arjun’s early shooting career
Arjun started his shooting career in 2015. He has been trained under Parvej Joshi (10m event coach), Kumar Hollinder (50m event coach), and Jaspal Rana (national coach).
In the World Championships 2018 in Changwon, Arjun won one gold medal in the 50m pistol men's junior event and a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol men's junior event. Also, in the ISSF Junior World Cup 2018 in Sydney, Arjun’s 10m air pistol men’s team won the gold medal.
In the World Championships 2021 in Lima, Arjun once again clinched a gold medal in the 50m pistol men’s junior event.
Recent Successes, Including Asian Games 2022 Gold
Arjun’s recent successes, including a team gold medal at the Asian Games 2022.
Arjun was also a part of the gold-medalist Indian shooting team in the 10m air pistol men’s team event at the Asian Games 2022 (along with Sarabjot Singh and Shiva Narwal).
In 2024, during the Asian Championships in Jakarta, while Arjun secured the silver medal in the 10m air pistol men's event, his 10m air pistol mixed team (along with Rhythm Sangwan) also finished in the second position to earn the silver medal.
How did Arjun Singh Cheema qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics?
Sarabjot Singh and Varun Tomer secured India’s two Paris 2024 quotas for the 10m air pistol men’s event. Meanwhile, Arjun also earned one quota point as the deemed quota holder.
In the four-stage national selection trials for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Arjun finished in the second position with a final average score of 582.37 to secure his place in the upcoming Summer Olympics. Sarabjot ended on top of the table with a final average score of 582.43.
