Second day of matchday 5 saw table-toppers Chennai City take on former champions and bottom-placed Aizawl FC in Aizawl.
It has been a disappointing start for the former champions as they are yet to taste a victory after suffering two defeats and two draws so far. Goals have been hard to come by as three of the four Aizawl goals have come from set pieces, indicating lack of ideas up front.
Meanwhile, Chennai City have been the most impressive side in the league, notching up three wins and a draw in four games collecting 10 points and yet to taste defeat.
Aizawl FC vs Chennai City FC
Aizawl FC (4-2-3-1)
Gift Raikhan opted to start with Kromah up front while Alfred Jaryan and Leonce Dodoz controlled proceedings from midfield.
Chennai City FC (4-2-3-1)
Chennai City had Nestor Gordillo in midfield with Edwin Vanspaul and Alexander Jesuraj deployed on the wings.
Match started in a dull manner as neither team were showing any intent. Few chances were created by both sides as it was a goalless first half.
The second half, however, got off to a terrific start as Chennai City got the lead within four minutes. The visitors were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position and up stepped Spanish striker Sandro Rodriguez to take it.
Aizawl pressed for the equaliser and were rewarded in the 72nd minute when Isak Vanlalruatfela received a through ball before finding Dodoz with a cross. His shot was parried by Kabir Thoufiq but Kromah was on hand to turn the rebound in.
However, their joy did not last long as Sandro restored Chennai City's lead within five minutes. The goal came out of nowhere, much to Aizawl's surprise. Jesuraj was the architect after finding himself in space down the right wing. His cross was perfect for Sandro who only had to direct it in with his head and register his third I-League goal of the season and continue Chennai's impressive start to the season.
