After winning the third consecutive Calcutta Football League (CFL), Mohammedan Sporting will be elated ahead of the new I-League season as they may get direct entry to ISL with new foreign investment. The Black Panthers could also earn promotion to the top tier by winning their league which will give them silverware regardless. They have also not won a national league in the club’s history despite their repeated success in other competitions. Hence, Andrey Chernyshov’s side is serious about taking the top spot in the I-League this time having finished a low eighth last time out.
The team has recruited strongly in the summer bringing in local talents as well as from the North East states. One of them has been the uprising talented striker David Lalhlansanga who has won the Golden Boot award in the Durand Cup and CFL as well. The 21-year-old was brought from former I-League winners Aizawl FC whom Mohammedan Sporting will begin their campaign against on 29 October 2023. Along with the season opener, the Black Panthers will play three straight home games to start the season. All against clubs from North East with Shillong Lajong and TRAU the others.
Mohammedan’s first away game comes next month with a trip to the nation’s capital to face promoted side Delhi FC. Not long after, they face three potential title contenders this time in corporate entry Inter Kashi, last season’s runners-up Sreendi Deccan and twice champions Gokulam Kerala consecutive times. Mohammedan’s last game of the first half of the campaign is at Naihati against Neroca FC on December 24, 2023.
