Der Klassiker, also known as the German Clasico is the name given to matches between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The 28th Matchday starts mid-week on 26th May. And it starts with a thriller, Der Klassiker. Dortmund is 2nd in the Bundesliga table with 57 points, just four points behind leaders Bayern. Bayern will travel to Signal-Iduna Park to extend their lead on top. This game could turn out to be a title decider.

Meetings between the two sides have always been close and nervy affairs. There have been some scintillating encounters between the two sides in the past.

1. Bayern 4-0 Dortmund (Bundesliga) – 9th November 2019

 

Just five points separated the top five at that time. Surprisingly, Monchengladbach were the league leaders before the game and both Dortmund and Bayern wanted a win to keep pace with them. Lewandowski opened the scoring for Bayern from Pavard’s cross. Bayern scored their second through Gnabry early in the 2nd half. Dortmund conceded two more goals in 5 mins through Lewandowski and an own goal from Hummels. The game ended in a big victory for the defending champions as the hosts surge up to third in the table and Dortmund dropped down to fifth.

 

2. Dortmund 2-0 Bayern (DFL Super Cup) – 4th August 2019

 

Signal Iduna Park was set to host the 2019 German Super Cup final. Dortmund luckily got their home advantage and faced Bundesliga Champions Bayern. Reus got an early chance to score but was beaten by Neuer. Paco Alcacer opened the scoring for BVB early in the second half through Sancho’s assist. Sancho doubled their lead in the 69th min and BVB saw out the rest of the game with minimum fuss and won their first silverware of 2019-20.

 

3. Bayern 5-0 Dortmund (Bundesliga) – 6th April 2019

 

Leaders Dortmund went into the game with a two-point lead over 2nd placed Bayern. Present BVB defender scored the first goal of the game for Bayern after heading past Burki in the 10th min. Bayern scored a quickfire second through Lewandowski who was given the ball by Zagadou. Bayern scores two more goals in the last five mins of the first half. A fifth goal was added in the last min of the game by Lewandowski. Bayern leapfrogged Dortmund to become the new leaders and went on to win the league.

 

 

4. Dortmund 3-2 Bayern (Bundesliga) – 10th November 2018

 

Dortmund came into the game after losing their first game of the season against Atletico. Dortmund leads the league table being four points ahead of 2nd placed Monchengladbach and 3rd placed Bayern. Lewandowski scored the first goal of the game for Bayern after heading past Hitz through Gnabry’s cross. Reus equalized for Dortmund through a penalty early in the second half. However, the celebrations were short-lived as Lewandowski scored again to put Bayern ahead. Reus equalized again for BVB by smashing a half-volley past Neuer. COMETH THE HOUR, COMETH THE MAN! Substitute Alcacer scored the winner by slipping the ball past Neuer. Dortmund extended their lead to the top while Bayern remained third, just a point ahead of Leipzig.

 

 

5. Bayern 6-0 Dortmund (Bundesliga) – 31st March 2018

 

Bayern were comfortable leaders at that time and led the table by 14 points. Lewandowski opened the scoring for Bayern in the fifth minute after Muller found him unmarked via a through ball. James Rodriguez scored the second goal nine mins later through Alaba’s cross. Muller made it 3-0 in the 23rd min through Rodriguez’s chipped cross. Bayern scored their fourth late in the first half through Lewandowski. Ribery scores their fifth of the game in the first half of extra time. Lewandowski scored his third and Bayern’s sixth late in the second half after a beautiful interchange of passes between Muller and Kimmich. Bayern restored their lead to 17 points and secured the Bundesliga title after winning their next game against Augsburg with five games to spare. Dortmund was left of third, four points behind Schalke.
