bayern munich vs psg head to head

Only a frequently played fixture in the Champions League in recent seasons, Bayern Munich and Paris-Saint Germain have produced some memorable clashes too hard to ignore. The most notable meeting was the Champions League final played in Lisbon in 2020. The first meeting between the two came in the 1994-95 season but the fixture picked up from the 2017-18 season and have faced each other almost every year since. There has not been a single draw in this fixture showing the determination of both sides leaving no ground for the other. Bayern Munich are just a win better than PSG in 13 meetings so far, scoring three more goals and keeping one additional clean sheet. Although the Ligue 1 giants have struggled in recent meetings, this remains one of the most competitive affairs in Champions League history.

Biggest win: Bayern Munich 5-1 PSG - Olympiastadion, Munich (23 October 1997)

After losing the first two meetings without scoring a goal, Bayern Munich made sure they did not end up on the losing side for the third straight time by registering their first win in style. The Bavarians welcomed Parisians at the Olympiastadion in Munich, wasting no time to get the home crowd on their feet with Giovane Élber scoring within four minutes. Carsten Jancker doubled the lead in the 21st minute before completing his brace right after half-time. Marco Simone tried to pull off an unlikely comeback scoring shortly later but PSG conceded again with Thomas Helmer adding a fourth for the hosts. The last nail in the coffin was hammered by Élber who completed his double late in the second half.

Biggest PSG win: 3-0 - Parc des Princes, Paris (28 September 2017)

PSG’s finest moment in the fixture came in the first meeting against Bayern after the Qatari takeover by the club in 2017. Coached by Unai Emery, the French side entered the clash possessing a deadly attacking line-up with Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, Brazilian star Neymar and the club’s record scorer Kylian Mbappé who joined the team that summer. The trio made the visitor's life miserable as they struggled to contain the ruthless nature of the host and went behind in only the second minute of the match with right-back Dani Alves giving the lead from fellow Brazilian Neymar’s pass. Mbappe then played in Cavani to score a first-time stunner to double the lead at the half-hour mark. Any sign of the jolted visitors even thinking about having a say in the game, despite coming close to breaking their duck, was throttled by Neymar who scored the sealer with Mbappe getting his second assist on the break.

Notable meeting: PSG 0-1 Bayern Munich - Estádio da Luz, Lisbon (24 August 2020)

The tip of the clash between the two when both made it into the final of the 2019-20 Champions League final at Lisbon in the season disrupted by the Covid pandemic. The European final played behind closed doors for the first time did not suppress the excitement level around the fixture. Both teams came into the fixture with excellent form but Bayern Munich was in a different gear under Hansi Flick that season who took charge only in November the previous year. Grabbing the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal earlier, the Bavarians were on course to complete a sensational treble but not before they had to ride off PSG’s attack mainly on the counter. Managed by Thomas Tuchel, the side entered the Champions League final for the first time in their history but it could have been glorious for them if they had taken the defining chances. Star keeper Manuel Neuer was equal to all those efforts including saving a one-on-one chance for Neymar to let Bayern find the winner through PSG’s academy graduate Kingsley Coman to lift their sixth Champions League title.
