On Saturday (19 August), during the ISSF World Championship 2023, Mehuli Ghosh secured India’s fourth quota in the shooting for the Paris 2024 Olympics. It is the first female quota for India for the upcoming Summer Olympics.
Baku (Azerbaijan) is hosting the ISSF World Championship 2023. In the women’s 10m air rifle final event, the 22-year-old Mehuli Ghosh (229.8) secured a bronze medal for her nation. She finished behind the Chinese duo Jiayu Han (251.4) and Zhilin Hang (250.2).
Another Indian Tilottama Sen finished in the fourth position in that same final event with a score of 208.4.
Earlier in the day, Ghosh, Sen and Ramita secured a gold medal for India in the women’s 10m air rifle team event with a total tally of 1895.9.
Though Ghosh has brought up India’s one quota in the women’s 10m air rifle for the Paris 2024 Olympics, it doesn’t mean she has booked her place for the next Summer Olympics.
In shooting events for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the quotas are allocated to the respective National Olympic Committee (NOC). The NOC has the full authority to take the final decision to fulfil the quotas for the Olympics.
Before Ghosh, India secured three male quotas in the shooting for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Who is Mehuli Ghosh?
It is not the first time Ghosh celebrated with a medal in the ISSF World Championship. In the 2018 and 2022 editions, she was a part of the 10m air rifle teams to win the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In the Commonwealth Games 2018, Ghosh won a silver medal in the 10m air rifle event. She also bagged a silver medal in the Youth Olympics 2018 (10m air rifle event).
During the South Asian Games 2019, Ghosh won the gold medal for her country in the 10m air rifle event.
