On his comeback during the match against New Zealand at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Indian right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami created World Cup history for India as he became the first Indian bowler to record a five-wicket haul more than once in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history.
It was the India vs New Zealand match in the 21st game at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at Dharamsala. After the hosts India sent the Blackcaps to bat first, New Zealand were restricted to 273 runs in 50 overs.

On his return, Mohammed Shami was outstanding from his first ball of the game, where he bowled the opener Will Young (17).
In the middle over, Shami was fantastic as he provided a crucial breakthrough by dismissing the set batter Rachin Ravindra (75), and broke a 159-run partnership for the third wicket between Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell.
In the slog overs, Shami was great with the ball as the Blackcaps batting couldn’t have proper answers. During that critical period, Shami bowled Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry in back-to-back deliveries before dismissing the centurion Mitchell (130) on the penultimate ball of the innings.
Shami finished the match with the bowling figures of 10-0-54-5. While India won the match by four wickets with 12 balls to spare, Shami won the Player of the Match award.
Mohammed Shami became the first Indian bowler to claim two five-wicket haul in ODI World Cup
Shami’s 5/54 was the second five-wicket haul in his ODI World Cup career. During the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Shami recorded a five-wicket haul against the hosts England with bowling figures of 10-1-69-5.
With his latest five-wicket haul against New Zealand, Shami became the first Indian bowler to record multiple five-wicket hauls in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history. Shami also became the ninth bowler to record more than one five-wicket haul in the ODI World Cup history.
Mohammed Shami has been in good form recently in spite of not playing too many matches, he performed exceptionally well whenever given the chance. During the Mohali ODI vs Australia, the Indian pacer Mohammed Shami became the first Indian pacer to collect an ODI five-wicket haul against Australia in India.
