While Australia won their sixth ODI World Cup title at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa was the best spinner in the tournament. During the Final of the tournament, he equalled the record for most wickets by a spinner in a single edition of the ODI World Cup.
Before the Cricket World Cup 2023, former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralidaran had the record for most wickets by a spinner in a single edition of the ODI World Cup with 23 wickets in the Cricket World Cup 2007.
Adam Zampa broke Muthiah Muralidaran’s record
Although Adam Zampa had a weak start at the ICC Men’s Cricket World 2023 as the Aussie leg-spinner took only one wicket in the first two games, he was the strong performer for his team in their last nine wins to lift the ODI World Cup trophy.
During the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Zampa managed three successive four-wicket hauls and two more three-wicket hauls. He finished the competition with 23 wickets as he equalled the record for most wickets by a spinner in a single edition of the ODI World Cup.
While Zampa was wicket-less against South Africa in the Semi-Final victory, he took a wicket in the Final against the hosts India to win the CWC 2023 trophy. With the wicket of Jasprit Bumrah in the Final, Zampa ended the tournament with 23 wickets.
