The 23-year-old Ugandan marathon runner Victor Kiplangat won the gold medal in the men’s marathon event at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
World Athletics Championships 2023: Men’s Marathon — Victor Kiplangat won gold with a solid performance
The Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medalist, Victor Kiplangat, clinched Uganda’s second gold medal at the World Athletics Championships 2023 on the final day (August 27) after finishing the marathon in 2 hours eight minutes and 53 seconds.
After Joshua Cheptegei’s gold medal in the men’s 10000m, Kiplangat became the second medalist from Uganda at the World Athletics Championships 2023.
Stephen Kiprotich was the first Ugandan to win a men’s marathon gold at the World Athletics Championships in 2013. Solomon Mutai was the only other Ugandan to win a World Championships medal (bronze in 2014) before Kiplangat’s latest gold.
Israeli Maru Teferi, who fell during the late moment of the race, surprisingly finished second place with his season-best performance (2:09:12) to acquire the bronze medal.
Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase (2:09:19) secured the bronze medal after finishing the marathon seven seconds later than Teferi. Since 2009, Ethiopia has won at least one medal in each men’s marathon event at the World Athletics Championships.

Victor Kiplangat said after winning the gold medal, "It was my day today, it was hot but the weather favoured me. I got a lot of experience from running in Birmingham and it was what helped me here."
