In their first game at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, South Africa had a dream start. The Proteas side thrashed some top ODI records, including setting up the first ODI World Cup innings with three centuries.
It was the match between South Africa and Sri Lanka in Delhi. South Africa batted first after losing the toss but set up the record ODI World Cup total of 428/5, thanks to three powerful centuries.
After the opening batter Quinton de Kock scored 100 runs in 84 balls (12 fours and 3 sixes), no.3 and no.4 batters Rassie van der Dussen 108 runs in 110 balls; (13 fours and 2 sixes), and Aiden Markram 106 runs in just 54 balls; (14 fours and 3 sixes) smashed hundreds. Markram even recorded the fastest World Cup century by recording his ton in only 49 balls.
In reply, Sri Lanka scored 326 all out in 44.5 overs as South Africa won by 102 runs.
South Africa became the first team to record three centuries in a World Cup innings. Meanwhile, it was the fourth time in ODI history to experience three hundreds in an innings. Out of those four ODI innings, three have been managed by the South African team.
