Mominul Haque, the recent Bangladesh captain, has resigned from the captaincy after the Test series defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka. By the way, Mominul Haque took over the captaincy of Bangladesh in 2019. According to Mominul, his batting was affected a lot during his captaincy, due to which he had to leave the captaincy.
In an interaction with ESPNcricinfo, Mominul said,
“When you play well, even if the team doesn’t win, you are still in a position to motivate them. I felt it was difficult to captain a team when I am not scoring and the team is not winning . I think it’s best to give up the captaincy.”.
Mominul Haque further added,
“I think I should focus on my batting. It was not a difficult decision. A captain has to contribute otherwise it brings a lot of pressure. The board president told me to stay but I don’t want to be the captain.” ‘
Under Mominul’s captaincy, Bangladesh played a total of 17 Test matches, losing 12 and winning only 3. Under his captaincy, Haq has also scored 3 centuries and 2 half-centuries and scored a total of 912 runs. But Bangladesh started this year by defeating New Zealand in a Test match at Mount Maunganui. But after this historic victory, Bangladesh had to face defeat in the next 4 test matches.
After Mominul’s poor captaincy, the Bangladesh Cricket Board continues to ponder over Shakib’s captaincy decision. Shakib, who was unavailable against the Pakistan series, has returned to the team from the Sri Lanka series.
Najmul told Cricbuzz, “Shakib can be captain in any format, but we need to know whether he will play (regular Test cricket). Shakib was our captain and there is no doubt about his captaincy, But we need to ensure their availability.”
Sri Lanka won the series by defeating Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the decider test match. In the second test match Bangladesh scored 365 runs in their first innings. In response, the Sri Lankan team added 506 runs, which included centuries from Mathus and Chandimal. Taking a lead of more than 100 runs, Sri Lanka had little hope from the Test match which was almost headed for a draw. But the end of the fourth day turned the whole game upside down.
Hosts Bangladesh ensured the result of the series at the end of the day losing 4 wickets. On the last and fifth day, Liton and Shakib handled the innings for some time but as soon as they were dismissed, the team could add only 169 runs in the second innings and gave Sri Lanka an easy target of 29 runs.
