Bryan Danielson vs Nigel McGuinness at AEW Grand Slam 2024

This was the first match of the Grand Slam. Nigel McGuinness made his entrance first and for a while there was no sign of Bryan Danielson. Nigel McGuinness thought that the match would not happen. Suddenly The Final Countdown started playing and the crowd started singing along. This was the first Nigel McGuinness match in more than a decade therefore it was Bryan Danielson who was the superior wrestler at the start as he was bossing Nigel McGuinness around. As time went along in the match it was Nigel McGuinness who was showing that he is a fantastic professional wrestler. Both Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness tried to make it physical but the lack of ring time for Nigel McGuinness showed. However as the match continued the chemistry got better and Nigel McGuinness got close to beating his greatest rival. Nigel McGuinness tapped out to the Yes Lock  but before doing so he said Thank You to Bryan Danielson. After the match Christian Cage wanted to cash in his contract that he won at All In but Kip Sabian stole the contract.

Hook beat Roderick Strong for FTW Championship

Hook announced the retirement from the FTW Championship
Hook announced the retirement from the FTW Championship

This was an FTW Rules Match for the FTW Championship. Hook had to fight Mike Bennett and Matt Taven as a part of the FTW Rules. When it was Hook vs Roderick Strong one on one then both men got physical and all weapons were brought out. However both men did not use weapons all the time and focused on wrestling. Hook locked Roderick Strong in his finisher which is the Red Rum and he won the match. After the match it was Hook who announced that he will retire from the FTW Championship and he and Tazz shared a father son moment. This was the end of the most unimportant championship in AEW.

The Young Bucks beat Will Osperay and Kyle Fletcher for AEW World Tag Team Championship

This match was the third tag team title defense for the Young Bucks after All In and All Out. The match started as The Young Bucks used hellish tactics to gain the upper hand in the match. Will Osperay used all his high flying moves such as the Ospreay cutter,  Frog Splash but the move Hidden Blade missed and the champions took full advantage. This was the best match out of all the 3 that The Young Bucks have had in this short period of time between All In and Grand Slam. This match had two commercial breaks in between and when Kyle Fletcher wanted to use the screwdriver, Will Osperay told him no and this cost Will Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher the tag team titles as The Young Bucks took full advantage of this and they used the tag team titles as weapons and won the match. This was a classic babyface mistake by Will Osperay.

Mariah May beat Yuka Sakazaki for AEW Women’s Championship

Before this match there was the debut of MVP who had arrived in AEW after departing WWE. He gave his card to Prince Nana and asked to give it to Swerve Strickland. The crowd was ready for the women to light up Arthur Ashe Stadium. Yuka Sakazaki first made her entrance and as Mariah May was making her entrance Yuka Sakazaki hit a beautiful springboard crossbody on the champion. The referee rang the bell and it was Mariah May who had the power advantage in this match. Yuka Sakazaki used her athleticism in this match and she came close to becoming champion. Mariah May hit Storm Zero which is the finisher of Toni Storm to win the match. The use of this move signals that it is not over between Mariah May and Timeless Toni Storm.

Jon Moxley beat Darby Allin to become number 1 contender for AEW World Championship

The main event of AEW Grand Slam was Jon Moxley vs Darby Allin to become the number one contender for the AEW World Championship. Jon Moxley took control of the match at the initial stages as he was pounding on Darby Allin. Darby Allin is known for taking immense punishment and not giving up. Jon Moxley was the heel and he used all types of underhanded tactics like distracting the referee, using the full five count to leave the rope. Darby Allin had some instances of comeback as he would hit a clothesline. In between the match Darby Allin tried for a suicide dive but he crashed as Marina Shafir had opened the ringside padding. This match was not a wrestling classic and it was Jon Moxley who won the match with his finisher Death Rider. Bryan Danielson tried to attack and choke Jon Moxley like he did at All Out but Claudio Castagnoli, PAC attacked the AEW World Champion. Jon Moxley Will challenge Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Championship at AEW WrestleDream which will take place on 12th October 2024.
