The 2023/24 Santosh Trophy will be the 77th edition of the National Football Championship and is the highest state competition for men’s football in the country. The tournament will see participation from 38 teams. Including the two finalists in the previous edition of the Santosh Trophy, Karnataka and Meghalaya who have gained direct entry into the Final Rounds of the competition. Ending a 54-year long wait, Karnataka won the title beating Meghalaya in a thrilling final which ended 3-2. The final was hosted at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. For the first time, the knockouts of the competition was played first time out of the country.
The 36 teams starting from the group stages have been divided into six groups of six teams each. The winners and the four best second-placed teams will join the winners and runners-up from the last edition in the final rounds of the Santosh Trophy. The group stage October 6 to 20, 2023 and the six groups will be hosted by the six member associations. AIFF also announced early in September that the final rounds will be held in Arunachal Pradesh with the dates yet to be announced. Therefore, the hosts of the final rounds have been exempted from playing the group stages.
