There was no comeback from India U17 team this time as they succumbed to a 1-0 loss to Uzbekistan U17 in their second group-stage match of the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2023. The 81st-minute strike of Mukhammedali Reimov became a dagger to the chest for India’s chances to get into the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Blue Colts will have to do win in the final group game against Japan U17 in what looks to be a David vs Goliath battle. However, they will exit the tournament irrespective of their result if the Uzbeks managed to win against Vietnam U17 whom India U17 drew 1-1 in the opener. All four teams in the group are in contention for the next round. This is not the situation Bibiano Fernandes would have hoped for but he wants his boys to keep believing in themselves.
The motive of letting Uzbekistan U17 dictate possession to counter at given chances did not work out. Even with Thanglalsoun Gangte starting the match, India U17 failed to do the good in the game. They will face a talented Japan U17 team fresh off beating Vietnam U17 4-0 with Kohei Mochizuki bagging a brace. However, the team stumbled in the first match drawing 1-1 against the White Wolves. That result could instil belief in the Blue Colts sitting third on the table with just a point on board. They need Vietnam in fourth, same on points but with an inferior goal difference, to do them a favor here. But first India U17 have to make the task for a historical win or else fear thrashing from the opposition.
