IND-U17 vs VIE-U17 Match Preview

Coach Bibiano Fernandes has set the target to reach the semifinals for the very first time in the 2023 AFC U17 Asian Cup Thailand which will guarantee them a place in the FIFA U17 World Cup later this year. It will be a historical feat for the Blue Colts who will make the grand stage for the first time as a qualified nation after hosting in 2017. The dream first needs to be fulfilled as India needs to be the absolute best to be among the top in a group containing Vietnam, Uzbekistan and title holders Japan. The preparation has been with high intensity for the group playing friendlies with top nations and also high profile clubs while touring Germany and Spain. Fernandes’ boys also registered historical results on the way. India qualified for the U17 Asian Cup as one of the four best runners-up teams having missed the top spot of the qualifying group to Saudi Arabia. The Blue Colts also faced Vietnam in their group opener in the previous edition, then U-16 Championship, with Vikram Pratap’s 86th-minute penalty the difference between the side. It will be another huge challenge again for India to begin with a victory and carry the momentum to a possible quarterfinal where they suffer a narrow 1-0 heartbreaking loss against South Korea in 2018 just a step away to qualify for the U17 World Cup.

The progress of Vietnam is well noted and like India, this group of players are motivated to appear in their first U17 World Cup as well. The result of this meeting four years back will surely play in their minds making the Golden Stars an opposition to pay attention to keeping aside their obvious talent and quality. That defeat cost them the second spot in the group five years back as India clinched it and progress to knockouts with leaders Indonesia. Vietnam have qualified for the 2023 edition in Thailand after topping their qualifying group. They have also played a host of friendlies to prepare for the tournament, losing to Yemen in the recent one but staying unbeaten in five matches prior. Vietnam have only progressed to the semifinals once, an eventual fourth-place finish in 2000. That year they participated for the first time in the competition and it remain their best performance to date. Hoàng Anh Tuấn’s side are hoping to perform at their best in a tough group and no better way to start off with a victory in the group opener.
