While the Indian team is one of the strongest teams in the T20I format, the nation has already seen many T20I centuries. As India produces young talents regularly, we have seen some youngsters grab the limelight with a T20I century in their early international careers.
In this article, we are going through the records for the top five youngest Indians to score T20I centuries. (Updated till 14 November 2024)
Youngest Indian T20I centurions
Abhishek Sharma (23 years and 307 days)
The left-handed batter Abhishek Sharma made his T20I debut during India's tour of Zimbabwe in 2024. After scoring a four-ball duck on his T20I debut, he scored a 46-ball century as an opener the next day at the age of 23 years and 307 days. With the help of seven fours and eight sixes, Sharma scored 100 runs off 47 balls. His powerful batting helped India to score 234/2 as the visitors won the second T20I by 100 runs to level the five-match T20I series (1-1).
Suresh Raina (23 years and 156 days)
At the age of 23 years and 156 days, the left-handed batter Suresh Raina became the first Indian batter to score a T20I century during the Gros Islet match against South Africa in the ICC World T20 2010. Raina scored 101 runs off 60 balls as India scored 186/5. South Africa were then restricted to 172/5.
Shubman Gill (23 years and 146 days)
During the 2023 Ahmedabad T20I against New Zealand, which was also a series decider, Shubman Gill scored 126 not out off 63 balls with 12 fours and seven sixes. It was his sixth T20I match where the right-handed batter completed his century in 54 balls. Scoring a T20I century at the age of 23 years and 146 days, Gill became the youngest Indian to record a T20I century, which he retained for eight months. After India scored 234/4, they bundled out New Zealand for only 66 runs to win the match by 168 runs (India’s largest winning margin) and the series by 2-1.
Tilak Varma (22 years and 5 days)
It was the third game of the four-match T20I series between the hosts South Africa and the visitors India. While the series was 1-1 before the match, India were sent to bat first. It was the 19th T20I for Varma, who came to bat at no.3 and scored 107 not out off 56 balls with the help of eight fours and seven sixes. While the batter scored his first T20I century at the age of 22 years and 5 days, India scored 219/6. Although the visitors controlled the game mostly, brave South Africa fought till the end. However, ultimately India took a 2-1 lead in the series after winning the thriller by 11 runs (South Africa 208/7).
Yashasvi Jaiswal (21 years and 279 days)
At the age of 21 years and 279 days, Yashasvi Jaiswal holds the record for the youngest Indian to score a T20I century, beating Shubman Gill’s record in this list. It was the Asian Games 2023 contest, where India beat Nepal by 23 runs in the high-scoring first quarter-final. Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was playing his sixth T20I match, where the youngster recorded his first T20I century and scored 100 off 49 balls with the help of eight fours and seven sixes. His batting helped India to score 202/4, while Nepal replied with 179/9.
