During the crucial fourth T20I of the five-match series between West Indies and India at Lauderhill, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill recorded India’s joint-highest opening partnership in T20I history. It was also the highest T20I opening partnership for any team against West Indies.
Leading the series by 2-1, West Indies chose to bat first and scored 178/8 in 20 overs. In reply, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill had a brilliant 165-run partnership for the first wicket. While Jaiswal scored 84 not out in 51 balls (11 fours and three sixes), Gill scored 77 off 47 balls (three fours and five sixes) as India chased the target in 17 overs after losing only one wicket.

Jaiswal and Gill’s 165-run opening partnership equalled India’s first-wicket partnership record in T20I history. During the 2017 Indore T20I against Sri Lanka, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul also recorded a 165-run partnership for the opening wicket. (Watch List 1)
However, Jaiswal and Gill’s 165-run first-wicket partnership was the joint second-highest T20I partnership for team India for any wicket. The record is a 176-run second wicket partnership between Sanju Samson and Deepak Hooda (vs Ireland at Dublin, Malahide, on 28 June 2022). (Watch List 1)
Meanwhile, Gill and Jaiswal’s 165-run partnership was the record T20I first wicket partnership for any team against West Indies. The previous record was a 158-run partnership between Pakistan cricketers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan at Karachi on 16 December 2021. (Watch List 2)
In the meantime, Gill and Jaiswal’s 165-run partnership also set the third place in the list of highest T20I partnerships for any wicket against West Indies. (Watch List 2)
