While the Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav played a strong role to thrash the hosts New Zealand at Mount Maunganui last Sunday night during the second game of the three-match T20I series, the experienced Kiwi pacer Tim Southee recorded his second T20I hat-trick.
After the washout in the opening game of this series, it was a vital match for both teams in this T20I series. The host Blackcaps won the toss and chose to field first in that penultimate game of this series, where Suryakumar Yadav’s 111 not out off 51 balls (11 fours and 7 sixes) helped the visitors to manage the big total of 191/6 in 20 overs.
Tim Southee claimed the latest T20I hat-trick in the last over of the innings
After Suryakumar already damaged the hosts’ confidence, the leading T20I wicket-taker Tim Southee claimed a hat-trick in the last over of that innings. In the third, fourth and fifth balls of the 20 overs of the first innings of that game, Southee dismissed skipper Hardik Pandya (13), Deepak Hooda (0) and Washington Sundar (0) to complete his second T20I hat-trick. Southee ended that innings with the bowling figures of 4-0-34-3.
After the former Sri Lankan right-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga, the 33-year-old New Zealand right-arm medium-fast bowler Tim Southee became the second bowler to manage two T20I hat-tricks.

Other crucial stats of Southee’s latest T20I hat-trick
It was the fourth T20I hat-tricks from New Zealand. Apart from Southee’s two T20I hat-tricks, Jacob Oram (vs Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2009) and Michael Bracewell (vs Ireland in Belfast in 2022) also recorded one T20I hat-trick each from this team.
After Sri Lankan cricketer Thisara Perera (at Ranchi in 2016), Southee became the second bowler to record a T20I hat-trick against India.
New Zealand lost by 65 runs
However, New Zealand failed to win the latest Mount Maunganui T20I as they were all out after managing a total of 126 runs in 18.5 overs. With that 65-run victory, India have taken a 1-0 lead in this 3-match T20I series with one to go.
