David Warner Creates History In His 100th Test Match

David Warner, one of the greatest Australian openers, scored a historic double-century in his 100th Test match. The left-handed opening batter just dominated in this historic Test match.

It was the crucial second game of the three-match Test series between the hosts Australia and the visitors South Africa at Melbourne. After the Proteas team was bundled out for just 189 runs, the hosts majorly dominated in their first innings, thanks to David Warner’s solid batting performance.   

Playing his 100th Test match, Warner made that game memorable with his incredible double-century. It was his 25th Test century as well as his third Test double-century. After completing his 200 runs in 254 balls (16 fours and 2 sixes), David Warner retired hurt due to an injury in his leg.

However, Warner returned to bat on the next day of the match (day 3) but lost his wicket on the very first ball as Anrich Nortje bowled him. So, the opening batter was out for 200 runs.

• Only second batter to score a double-century in an innings during his 100th Test match. English cricketer Joe Root became the first to record this when he played his 100th Test match against India in Chennai in February 2021, where Root scored 218 runs.

• Only second cricketer to score at least a century in both of his 100th Test and ODI matches. Warner played his 100th ODI against India at Bengaluru on 28th September 2017, where the left-handed opener scored 124 runs. Legendary Caribbean cricketer Gordon Greenidge scored centuries in his 100th Test and ODI matches (102* vs Pakistan during Sharjah ODI on 18th October 1988 and 149 vs England during St John's Test in April 1990).

• Second Australian cricketer to score a century in his 100th Test match. Ricky Ponting was the other Aussie cricketer on this list as he hit two centuries in his 100th Test match (120 and 143 vs South Africa in 2006).

• Tenth cricketer to score a century in his 100th match in Test career.

Australia won by an innings

Also, the wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey scored a century (111), while Steven Smith (85), Travis Head (51) and Cameron Green (51*) scored the 50s as Australia declared that innings on 575/8. The hosts already managed to take a lead of 386 runs.

Then, South Africa were all out for just 204 runs as the Australian team won the game by an innings and 182 runs. With that win, Australia have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in this three-match Test series with one Test to go.
