In all the excitement for the IPL 2022, there was a great news that came in yesterday which will make all cricket fans happy as the much awaited Women’s IPL is set to be a reality from next year as six teams will take part in the tournament which will begin from next year and this was a news that all the cricket fans from around the world had been demanding for since a number of years and the BCCI gave many reasons against it but it finally seems that the time has come.
BCCI has been running a three team T201 challenge for a number of years and it has been very successful as the fans have come out in large numbers to support Women’s cricket and this year there is a sponsor for the same event so this has also helped for the formation of the Women’s IPL from next year. So, let’s look at this proposed tournament and the road to getting here.
Demand for a Women’s lPL
There has been high demand for the Women’s IPL since a number of years as the women’s cricket has been growing and growing for a number of years and other countries like Australia and England have been having the WBBL and The Hundred and this also made the BCCI look bad that they do not give the same importance to Women’s cricket and from last year the chorus grew to such a level that the officials had to come out and say that they are working on a formula that will help this tournament take place.
Benefits of a Women’s IPL
We need not look much further than all the benefits that the IPL has had for young players from India and around the world and that this tournament has made many Superstars in world cricket and the standard of cricket around the world improved a lot over the last 15 years. The WBBL has made Australia an unstoppable team in the Women’s game and their performance at the ongoing World Cup is proof that they are levels ahead from the rest of the teams in the world so having a Women’s IPL will have many benefits such as it will make India a much better team in the long run and that more and more young female cricketers will come up to play cricket abs it will help grow the sport a great deal.
Format of the tournament
It has been proposed that the Women’s IPL will be a six team tournament and that it will be held in q separate window in the year and just like the IPL there will be foreign and Indian players and this six team format is perfect for the first few years as the players will grow over the years and the teams can be increased and more players can get the opportunity to be financially stable in their lives as well. The existing franchises of the IPL will be given preference as to whether they want to own a Women’s IPL team and the reports are that 4 teams are interested in buying teams in the Women’s IPL and this is a good sign for the tournament and the rest of the details will be announced later. This is a great moment for Women’s cricket and hopefully it will be as successful as the Men’s IPL.
