Manchester City face Chelsea in an exciting top-four clash on Saturday. The Citizens are on top of the Premier League table with 80 points from 34 games, 13 points ahead of second-placed Manchester United. Manchester City have been incredibly good this season and have a chance of doing the Champions League and Premier League double. They defeated PSG in the semifinals of the Champions League to reach the first final in their history.
Chelsea are fourth in the table, two points behind third-placed Leicester City. Chelsea sacked Lampard mid-season and appointed Tuchel, who has done extremely well with the talented players at his disposal. Chelsea defeated Real Madrid in the Champions League semis to reach the final.
Both teams face each other in the Champions League final. But before that, they play this weekend in the Round 35 of the Premier League.
Here we take a look at how the past five meetings between Manchester City and Chelsea panned out:
1. Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City (FA Cup) – 17th April 2021
The Citizens remained in the hunt for a domestic treble as they reached the semifinals of the FA Cup after beating Everton 2-0 at the Goodison Park. Previously they had knocked Birmingham, Cheltenham and Swansea out of the FA Cup. Chelsea reached the semis after cruising past Sheffield, Barnsley, Luton Town and Morecambe. It was a dull first half as both teams failed to create many chances and it was still goalless at the break. Ziyech’s tap in the 55th min was enough for Chelsea to end City’s hopes for an unprecedented quadruple.
2. Chelsea 1-3 Manchester City (Premier League) – 3rd January 2021
Lampard’s Chelsea hosted an in-form Manchester City in the Round 17 clash of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea were struggling in the Premier League, winning just one out of their last five games. They were in a dire need of a win. However, City managed to score in the 18th min through Gundogan’s strike. Three mins later, Foden slotted home from a close-ranged to double City’s lead. Kevin De Bruyne converted from a close range to wrap up the game early. Chelsea managed to get a consolation goal and deny Zack Steffen a clean sheet through Hudson-Odoi’s 92nd min goal.
3. Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City (Premier League) – 26th June 2020
Chelsea got back to their winning ways and moved up into the top four by beating Aston Villa. Manchester City were in fine form as well, having beaten Burnley 5-0 and Arsenal 3-0. However, this game was a massive one for Liverpool fans as a Chelsea win would mean that Liverpool will be crowned Premier League champions for the first time. Chelsea took the lead in the 36th min through Pulisic, who was fantastic so far for the Blues. Kevin De Bruyne levelled the score early in the second half through a superb freekick. Few mins later, Sterling came close to scoring another one for City as he struck the woodwork after a brilliant counter-attack. Fernandinho was sent off in the 77th min after blocking Chelsea’s shot on the goal line and the Blues were awarded a penalty. Willian scored past Ederson to ensure a 2-1 victory over the Citizens. The result meant that Liverpool are the Premier League champions of 2019-20.
4. Manchester City 2-1 Chelsea (Premier League) – 23rd November 2019
Manchester City came into this game following a defeat at the hands of leaders Liverpool. A win for Pep’s side meant that they would overtake the Blues into third. Chelsea had an impressive start to the game as Kante gave them the lead in the 21st min. A long ball launched by Kovacic caused problems for City as Kante rolled the ball past Ederson. The celebrations were short-lived as City drew level through Kevin De Bruyne’s low strike. Eight mins later, City scored their second, which turned out to be the winner, through Riyad Mahrez, as the Algerian’s ball curled into the bottom-left of the net.
5. Chelsea 0-0 (3-4) Manchester City (EFL Cup Final) – 24th February 2019
Chelsea faced Manchester City in the EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Both teams had a fair share of chances to score but the game ended scoreless till 90 mins. The game went into extra time. At the end of extra time, Sarri redied Caballero and the fourth official put the board up. But Kepa refused to be substituted and it made Sarri furious. City ran out winners as Jorginho and David Luiz missed their penalties.
