During the first Test of the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23 (India vs Australia), Indian captain Rohit Sharma became the first Indian skipper and fourth overall captain to hit at least one century in each of all three formats (Test, ODI and T20I).
Nagpur hosted the four-match Test series opener, where the visitors Australia just surrendered as they suffered a big innings defeat. After the Aussies chose to bat first, they were bundled out for only 177 runs in the first innings.
Rohit Sharma: ninth Test century; first century as a Test captain
In reply, India scored 400 runs, as they managed the 223 runs lead at the end of that innings. While the lower-order batters provided strong support to manage a huge total on that tough batting pitch [Ravindra Jadeja (70), Axar Patel (84) and Mohammed Shami (37)], the skipper Rohit Sharma set up that tone with an incredible century (120) as an opener.
While it was Rohit’s ninth Test hundred, it was his first Test century as an Indian captain. Earlier, the right-handed batter also hit three ODI centuries and two T20I hundreds as a captain.
So, with the latest century in the Nagpur Test, Rohit became the first Indian captain as well as the fourth overall captain to score centuries in all three formats.
Australia 2nd innings 91 runs; India won by an innings and 132 runs
In their second innings of the Nagpur Test, Australia were bundled out for only 91 runs – their second-lowest completed Test innings total against India. The hosts won the Test match by an innings and 132 runs and have taken the series lead by 1-0.
