Manu Bhaker Scripts History, Wins India's First Medal at Paris Olympics

Manu Bhaker created history by winning India's first medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The young sensation clinched bronze in the 10m Air Pistol event, becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in the sport.

Manu Bhaker won bronze medal in 10m Air Pistol

It has taken 2 days and the first medal for India at Paris Olympics 2024 has arrived. It has come in the sport of shooting which has 21 shooters vying for the medals. Manu Bhaker has won a Bronze Medal in the 10M Air Pistol Shooting Event for India. She has also become the first ever female shooter to win an Olympic Medal for India. Manu Bhaker has had a remarkable journey to get to this point in her career.

Let’s look at the Results of the Event and talk about Manu Bhaker


10M Air Pistol Women’s Final

This was the first shooting final that India took part in at the Paris Olympics. It was the best 8 shooter in the world. Manu Bhaker finished 3rd in the qualifying for this final with a score of 580.  The opponents of Manu Bhaker were –

  • Oh Ye Jin of South Korea

  • Kim Ye- Ji of South Korea

  • Trinh Thu Vinh of Vietnam

  • Li Xue of China

  • Jiang Ranxin of China

  • Sevval Ilayda Tarhan of Turkey

  • Veronika Major of Germany

The Results

There were a total of 10 shots that were given to the shooters before the elimination rounds began. Manu Bhaker completed the first 5 shots with a score of 50.4. She hit 10.6,10.2,9.5,10.5 and 9.6. In the second series of 5 shots she hit 10.1, 10.3, 9.6, 9.6 and 10.3 giving her a total of 100.3 from 10 shots. After these 10 shots it was elimination time as after every 2 shots a shooter will be eliminated from the competition.


In the first 2 shots of the elimination round Manu Bhaker hit an impressive 10.5 and 10.4 which took her to second place. Veronika Major was eliminated at 8th place with a score of 114.0. In the 13th and 14th shots Manu Bhaker hit 2 shots of 9.8. Sevval Ilayda Tarhan was eliminated with a score of 135.6 and she finished 7th. A 9.9 in the 15th shot was followed by a good 10.2 In the 16th shot. Jiang Ranxin from China who was the bronze medalist from Tokyo is eliminated in 6th place. She had a score of 156.5. Manu Bhaker hits a 10.1 Followed by 10.2 in the 17th and 18th shots. Xue Li of China is eliminated with a score of 178.2.

It was the Top 4 and now the pressure was on and Manu Bhaker hit a 10.1 and Followed it with 10.0. Her opponent Trinh Thu was eliminated at 4th place with a score of 198.6. With this Manu Bhaker created history and she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shouting. She wanted to upgrade the color of the medal. Manu Bhaker hit a 10.1 and then she followed it with a 10.3. Her opponent Kim Ye- Ji hit a 10.5 in the decisive shot and she edged Manu Bhaker by 0.1 points who finished with 221.7. It was down to the Top 2 and Oh Ye Jin of South Korea finished with 243.2 to win the Gold Medal. Manu Bhaker still has 1 event left which is the 25M Air Pistol Women’s Event. Manu Bhaker has etched her name forever in the history books.

Manu Bhaker is only 22 years old but she has seen it all. She has won a total of 15 Gold Medals in all various competitions and a total of 20 Medals including 3 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze. At Tokyo 2020, Manu Bhaker has a horror time as she was just 18. Her Pistol had a malfunction and she had a falling out with her coach Jaspal Rana and she even contemplated quitting the sport in 2023. She called Jaspal Rana asking to train her for Paris Olympics and from there till now it has been a remarkable journey. Manu Bhaker will forever be the first Female shooter to win a medal for India at the Olympics. She has won a Gold Medal and a Silver Medal at the World Championships of Shooting. She can add another Medal in the 25M Air Pistol Event. She said after winning the Bronze Medal that reading the Bhagavad Gita helped her calm her nerves better and that was a catalyst for her winning the Bronze Medal.
