Steve Clarke announced a 26 player squad for Scotland traveling to Germany for UEFA Euro 2024. Two players will be cut from the main list next month. Injuries and fitness have affected the team in the run-up to the tournament, although most of the key players are available. Scotland are aiming to make it to the knockout stage of the Euros for the first time on the back of a promising qualifying campaign. A challenging group awaits them in the finals with Switzerland, Hungary and hosts Germany to face in Group A.
History
This will be Scotland’s fourth participation in the European Championship and the second time this century. The Tartan Army ended a 25-year-long drought of not qualifying for the finals in the last edition but failed to make it out of the group stage just like the previous editions. Clubbed in a difficult group with Croatia, Czech Republic and rivals England, Clarke’s men managed only a point in a goalless draw against the Three Lions. The team scored only one goal in that tournament. Overall, Scotland managed just two wins in their first two Euros which were consolation at best.
Scotland squad for Euro 2024
Goalkeepers: Angus Gunn (Norwich City), Zander Clark (Hearts), Liam Kelly (Motherwell)
Defenders: Andrew Robertson (Liverpool), Grant Hanley (Norwich City), Kieran Tierney (Real Sociedad), Scott McKenna (Copenhagen), Jack Hendry (Al-Ettifaq), Liam Cooper (Leeds United), Greg Taylor (Celtic), Ryan Porteous (Watford), Anthony Ralston (Celtic), Ross McCrorie (Bristol City)
Midfielders: John McGinn (Aston Villa), Callum McGregor (Celtic), Stuart Armstrong (Southampton), Scott McTominay (Manchester United), Ryan Christie (Bournemouth), Kenny McLean (Norwich City), Billy Gilmour (Brighton), Ryan Jack (Rangers)
Forwards: James Forrest (Celtic), Lyndon Dykes (QPR), Ché Adams (Southampton), Lawrence Shankland (Hearts), Ben Doak (Liverpool)
Captain: Andrew Robertson
Manager: Steve Clarke
There has been a call-up of two uncapped players Ben Doak and Ross McCrorie but the former has not played a game since December due to a knee injury. James Forrest returns to the Scotland set-up after three years. Stuart Armstrong is also included despite having injury problems. It is left to see whether they make the final squad for the tournament. Wing-backs Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson are both missing with hamstring injuries which provides a challenge for Clarke. Craig Gordon and John Souttar are the players excluded from the preliminary list.
Formation: How will Scotland Lineup at Euro 2024?
Scotland could line up in their preferred 3-4-2-1 formation in the Euro 2024 but Clarke will need to address some issues. The loss of two wing-backs in the same position at the right flank has reduced alternatives so Stuart Armstrong could be used for the role. Anthony Ralston has not been a first-choice at Celtic and is unlikely to get the nod with less game-time. Additionally, the striker's position is also questionable with Scotland failing to score any goal this year. Southampton’s Che Adams might top the pecking order but his place could be threatened by Lyndon Dykes or Lawrence Shankland.
