The important Group A match of
the UEFA Euro 2024, Scotland vs Hungary, ended in a dramatic fashion with a
100th-minute match-winning solitary goal by the Hungarian Kevin Csoboth. With
that goal, he set a new record for the latest goal in regulation time in UEFA
Euro history.
Group A of the UEFA Euro 2024
consisted of the hosts Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, and Scotland. As Germany
already sealed their place in the Round of 16, and Switzerland were in a strong
position to advance to the Round of 16, even before the match of Germany vs
Switzerland, the Scotland vs Hungary fixture became the must-win game for both
teams to secure third place.
Although Scotland could secure
the third spot in the points table with two points by securing a draw against
Hungary, it wouldn’t be enough for them to finish among the top four out of six
third-ranked teams to qualify for the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Hungary can only
manage the third position in Group A with a victory.
In the Scotland vs Hungary match, Scotland couldn’t record a shot on goal out of their four attempted shots. Meanwhile, Hungary managed five on-targets out of 14 attempted shots. Despite several crucial attempts, the match mostly remained with a 0-0 scoreline before the late drama.
Hungarian Kevin Csoboth scored the latest goal in regulation time in European Championship history
While the second-half stoppage time was stretched to 12 minutes, the 24-year-old Hungarian substitute Kevin Csoboth scored the historic 100th-minute goal (90’+10’) to eliminate Scotland from the Group Stage and keep Hungary in the Round of 16 contention.
It all started at a crucial corner for Scotland. After the Hungarian defense secured possession, a perfect counterattack resulted in the crucial goal for Hungary in 99 minutes and 32 seconds. Hungarian forward Kevin Csoboth, who joined the attack in the 86th minute, made no mistake in the late opportunity as he perfectly netted Roland Salla’s great pass to seal a memorable victory for Hungary. It was his first international goal since making his debut for the Hungary senior team last year.
Latest goal in UEFA Euro history
Although Turkish Semih Sentürk
still holds the record for the latest goal in European Championship history
with his 122nd-minute goal against Croatia in the 2008 Quarter-final, Csoboth
set up a new record for the latest goal in regulation time in European
Championship history with his 99:32-minute goal against Scotland.
