Serbia hopes to make a mark in Euro 2024 having qualified for the tournament for the first time as an independent nation. Dragan Stojković’s side are paired with Slovenia, last edition’s semifinalists Denmark and finalists England in Group C. With multiple star players, the Eagles hope to advance past the group stage similar to their achievement in 2000 as FR Yugoslavia. The two-time runners-up of the tournament will begin their quest in Germany on 17 June 2024 with the Three Lions to face in the opener.
History
Serbia will be appearing for their first Euro Championship since the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 2006. Before that, the side finished as runners-up in the inaugural competition in 1960 and once again in 1968. Their last appearance came in 2000 when they competed as FR Yugoslavia and finished as a quarterfinalist. Serbia came close to qualifying for Euro 2020 with a star-packed squad but was defeated by Scotland 5-4 on penalties in the play-off final with record-scorer Aleksandar Mitrović’s saved spot-kick becoming the decider. Surprisingly, Serbia participated in four of the last five World Cups simultaneously. They have broken the curse of not qualifying for the Euros at last.
Qualification for Euro 2024
There was no mistake for Serbia this time as they earned the direct slot to Euro 2024 by finishing second in their qualifying group. Stojković’s team finished four behind group winners Hungary but were three points better than Montenegro in third. Serbia managed four victories scoring 15 goals of which five came from Mitrović’s boots. Recently, the team has been inconsistent with their result but the 3-0 success over Sweden before they head to the tournament should give them a sense of optimism.
