It has always been a point of discussion between football fans around the world that which European football league is the best and the most competitive in the world. While no one could have anticipated a worldwide pandemic would end, put a stop to football for four long months - and constrain it to be suspended permanently in certain nations. However, despite the pandemic, there weren't such a large number of astonishments when it went to the league champions in the top European leagues.
Liverpool won the Premier League for the first time in their history. While there were many familiar names who won the other leagues – Real Madrid (La Liga), Bayern Munich (Bundesliga), Juventus (Serie A), PSG (Ligue 1). Liverpool won the league with 18 points gap from 2nd placed Manchester City.
So, is the Premier League still the most competitive league in the world? Let’s check out.
Top teams in the top five leagues
The Premier League has a ‘top six’ at the moment but if you look at the past 2-3 seasons, many other clubs have been challenging for the Champions League spots. The top 6 includes Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur. Other top teams include Everton, Leicester City and Wolves.
La Liga has a ‘top three’ at the moment which includes Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. Other top teams just fight for the fourth Champions League spot which includes Sevilla, Valencia and Villareal.
The Bundesliga has a top-two – Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. But recently, RB Leipzig, Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen have been giving a tough fight in the league.
Ligue 1 has just one team which has the monopoly – Paris Saint-Germain.
Serie A has also been a one team thing recently with Juventus winning the last nine titles. AC Milan and Inter Milan form the top three but AC Milan haven’t been at the top recently.

This table proves that the Premier League wasn’t as competitive as it has been in the past decade. Liverpool’s domination was unbelievable. As per this table, Serie A looks pretty close but Juventus won the league and then dropped points in the end that led to the decrease in the points gap.
Points dropped by top teams in the top five leagues
If we look at the Premier League, Liverpool managed to gain 99 points last season, 1 less than City’s record total. They dropped just 15 points in total. Premier League top teams dropped more points than the top teams from La Liga and Serie A. There were more draws and losses for the top teams in Spain and Italy last season.
Despite the Premier League having the best managers managing the top teams, Liverpool managed to dominate so much. While there was some parity in the other leagues except Bundesliga, which has been totally dominated by Bayern for more than half-a-decade.
Conclusion
All football leagues produce a high amount of passion and desire in their respective competitions, but if we look at the top five leagues, Premier League, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga were won by a good margin. La Liga has been competitive now as Real Madrid and Barcelona are now in the transition phase of rebuilding. Serie A has also been very competitive and the next season could end Juventus’ run to Scudetto. So, the Premier League is not the most competitive league in the world at the moment. Apart from Ligue 1 and Bundesliga, the rest three of the top five – La Liga, Serie A and Premier League are very competitive.
