A spirited Austria side under Ralf Rangnick wants to translate their Euro 2024 qualifying form into the finals in Germany. A severe challenge awaits them in Group D with France to face in their tournament opener followed by Poland and Netherlands. Austria will have the tussle for the third spot in the group if not the top two so a slip-off could be costly. Rangnick’s team are appearing for consecutive Euros for the first time and with momentum in hand, having lost only once in two years.
History
Austria has qualified for four European Championships including the latest edition hosted by Germany. All of their appearances in the tournament have come this century with their debut in 2008 as a result of being the hosts along with Switzerland. The best performance for Burschen came in Euro 2020 when they reached the knockouts for the first time. They collected the first wins in the tournament against North Macedonia and Ukraine but were defeated by Italy in the last-16 2-1 in extra time. Austria qualified directly for Euro 2024 along with Belgium in their group, finishing just a point behind the Red Devils, collecting six wins out of eight games and scoring 17 goals.

Midfielder Xaver Schlager and keeper Alexander Schlager are also out through injuries. Defender Stefan Lainer, goalkeeper Tobias Lawal and midfielder Thierno Ballo are cut from the preliminary squad. In the absence of Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer will captain the side after experiencing an impressive run to the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund.
