Why storytelling is the most important thing in wrestling?

Professional wrestling or Sports Entertainment or whatever the fans want to call it is something that the WWE fans watch because they want to be entertained and they watch for the various stories that play out during the course of the show. The in ring Matches are the highlight of any WWE show but the Stories behind those matches are the ones which make the matches stick out more than the ones which do not have a good story leading to it.

Storytelling is the single most important part of WWE and the WWE management led by Triple H realizes that and this is the reason why there have been so many good stories in WWE over the years even when Vince McMahon was the boss.

So, let’s look at why storytelling is the most important thing in wrestling:

It makes the fans care about the feud and the wrestlers

Storytelling is the tool that keeps the fans engaged and invested and a good story makes the fans care about the feud and about the wrestlers that are in that feud. A good story told in the ring and in promos and weeks leading to the match makes the fans anticipate the match more aw compared to the ones where the matches are just being made randomly without any story behind it. The crowds during the shows where these Matches take place are the loudest when the matches where there is a great story leading into the match.

Long Term Storytelling means more money

The prime example of this is The Bloodline story that has been going on in WWE for 3 years and this story has been so good that it has carried WWE during difficult times. The story of The Bloodline has generated multiple millions in revenue for WWE including merchandise sales from the different shirts that they made and selling out show after show wherever The Bloodline was In and that generated a lot of money as well for WWE because the fans want to see and he live in person as to what will happen at the show. Without a good story the fans will not care much for the shows and they would rather watch at home. So having a good story not only makes sense creative wise but also business wise.

The Fans are ready to see the same match many times if the story is good

There is a complaint that WWE has the same matches between the same WWE superstars but in different variations but if the story leading into every match is top notch then the fans are ready to watch any number of matches. The prime examples are Seth Rollins vs Edge a few years ago and Seth Rollins vs Cody Rhodes last year. The fans were ready to watch 3 Matches between them or in The Bloodline there are a variation of matches between the members of The Bloodline but the story is so good that the WWE fans are willing to see any variation of matches.
