Chelsea played an exciting 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night replicating the scoreline of the reverse fixture at Anfield. However, the match turned out to be more interesting than the last one as the Reds will call them fortunate for escaping with a point after two goals from the home side were disallowed. The Blues also wasted a catalog of begging chances to score in a much-improved performance in their first match after manager Graham Potter’s sacking. Both teams stayed in their position in the league chart with this result, Chelsea sitting in the 11th position with 39 points four less than Liverpool in eighth. It is fair to say the draw did not help anybody on the day.
Under the interim boss Bruno Saltor, Chelsea began on the front foot and almost took the lead in the fourth minute with Joel Matip making a crucial block before Joao Felix could pull his trigger at goal after Kostas Tsimikas gave the ball away. Reece James thought he had done so when he smashed his effort past Alisson from a corner but the goal was ruled out as Enzo Fernandez interfered from an offside position before the ball came to him. The flow of Chelsea’s dominance continued in the second half with Mateo Kovacic probably missing the opportunity of the game by blazing his effort with only the keeper to beat. A minute later the Blues found the net again through Kai Havertz but the celebration was cut short after VAR saw the German’s saved effort rebound off his arm before the ball rolled past the line. The frantic affair ended goalless at the last.
While Chelsea seemed to find new energy in themselves amid a dismal season, Liverpool continued their sober run in away games although stayed unbeaten in the last five visits to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League for the very first time. Dropping stars of their glorious times in the last seasons like Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson to the bench did not bring the freshness to the side expected as the Reds looked wobbly in defense again and were left toothless in attack. Apart from a Joe Gomez long-range strike just before half-time, Jurgen Klopp’s side did not test Kepa Arrizzabalaga enough. Liverpool are now four games without a win in all competitions ahead of a crucial clash with league leaders Arsenal, unstoppable at the moment, At Anfield. Meanwhile, Chelsea will be looking for their first win in three games with a trip to Wolves this weekend.

Chelsea and Liverpool played a goalless draw for the fourth successive time in all competitions after the nil-nil draw at Anfield earlier this season and the two cup finals last year. It is the third-ever fixture between two English sides in the top flight to finish goalless in four successive matches. This is the sixth successive draw Liverpool played with Chelsea, the most they have done facing opposition in the top-flight. The Blues did the same previously against Burnley between August 1954 and February 1956. The last time a side emerged victorious in this clash was Chelsea in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel at Anfield in the Premier League.
Bumpy ride
Liverpool struggled massively in away games this season having collected only 13 points on the road in the Premier League. This is the fewest managed by the Reds from the first 15 matches since the 1992-93 season when they picked only 11.
Scoreless
Chelsea have scored 29 goals in 29 matches in the Premier League this season which is the third-fewest managed in a league campaign in their history. They have also failed to score in the first half of their last eight matches at Stamford Bridge, their joint-longest barren run in the competition since the period between November 1992 and March 1993. On the flip side, Liverpool have only scored 11 second-half goals in their last 18 Premier League games with six coming in the 7-0 hammering of Manchester United last month.

The Brazilian has made 85 saves in the present campaign which is the best he managed in his Premier League career with the Reds, nine more than the last one.
