MBSG vs OFC Match Preview
Mohun Bagan looked to be the favourites to qualify for the knockout stages of the AFC Cup once again having started the campaign brightly with a 4-0 win at Odisha and a 2-1 victory against Maziya at home. However, two unwanted results against Basundhara Kings resulted in the Bangladesh league champions overtaking them for the top spot although level on points. While the 2-2 draw in India kept them as leaders, the 2-1 loss in Kings Arena in Bangladesh became damaging. Further, Juan Ferrando’s men lost the game even after taking the lead in the match through Liston Colaco. Bagan’s 10-game unbeaten run which included nine victories came to an end with the defeat possibly ending their stay on the continental stage this season. Their head-to-head record also got a major hit which means the Kolkata giants will be eliminated even after winning their remaining games provided the Kings also do the same. Both will finish on equal points in that regard, the current scenario on the points table. For now, Mohun Bagan have to make sure they come out of the Orissa game with all three points having not lost at Salt Lake since August this year. However, injuries to key players are once again plaguing the squad and will be a big factor again on Monday. Another defeat will further complicate the situation for them with the first-placed side only qualifying.
Odisha FC will be wishing to pick up their first-ever win against the Mariners which could turn out to be the most crucial one in the club’s history. The maiden AFC Cup journey for the Juggernauts did not have the best of beginnings as they were routed 4-0 by the same opposition at home and then lost 3-2 at the King’s Arena. Sergio Lobera’s men then turned up the gear in the two clashes with Maziya, winning an emphatic 6-1 at home and then making a miraculous second-half turnaround from two goals down to win 3-2 at Maldives. Center-back Mourtada Fall scored for back-to-back games in the AFC Cup and against the same opposition to begin Odisha’s charge before Diego Mauricio found the equalizer and his strike partner Roy Krishna smashed in the late winner. The series of victories has given motivation to the side who will be looking for more results in their favour to generate qualification chances. For that, they have to beat the top two, Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bashundhara Kings, in their remaining games or will have to ask Maziya to do the task for them should they stumble. However, Odisha FC will not be willing to take the difficult road by any means and hope for three more points in the daunting trip to Kolkata having just won two away games in 2023.
