Swiss Tennis player Roger Federer’s announced a minor surgery on his right knee will have him benched until Wimbledon scheduled at the end of June is sending quakes through the tennis community.

The 38-year-old had undergone a similar arthroscopic knee surgical procedure in Switzerland in order to patch a torn meniscus in his left knee back in 2016, and this will be the second time the player will go under the knife for the knee.

He returned from his former surgery in 2016 with a major comeback victory- winning the Australian Open in 2017.

Federer is set to miss a number of major tournaments before the Roland Garros event but hopes to return just in time for the grass-court season this year.

"My right knee has been bothering me for a little while. I hoped it would go away, but after an examination, and discussion with my team, I decided to have arthroscopic surgery in Switzerland yesterday," said Federer.

"After the procedure, the doctors confirmed that it was the right thing to have done and are very confident of a full recovery. As a result, I will, unfortunately, have to miss Dubai, Indian Wells, Bogota, Miami, and the French Open. I am grateful for everyone's support.

"I can't wait to be back playing again soon, see you on the grass!"

Federer has registered 20 victories in the grand slam and exhibited minor signs of injury in his last appearance at the Australian Open’s grand slam in January. The player also struggled with a devastating groin injury during his quarterfinal match against American Tennys Sandgren and was left requiring off-court treatment during his straight-sets semi-final defeat by Serbian Novak Djokovic.

Federer’s Twitter post informing his followers about missing the four lead up tournaments including the French Open met with disarray as fans registered their grief. The news also cast the shadow of ambiguity on whether the 38-year-old would be seen at the Wimbledon.

The major cause of concern on the part of fans and a greater part of the tennis industry the fact that at this juncture of Federer’s career, he is advancing towards the final leg of his lawn tennis story. However, fans are harboring hope that the player would soon be back in action, despite his fluctuating health state.

Whatever the future holds, to everyone who has been an avid or a casual follower of tennis, Federer has been a remarkable character and will always be.
