Sergio Aguero retirement and his greatest career moments

A glorious career is going to end in an unfortunate way as Sergio Aguero announced his retirement on Wednesday, December 15th after suffering a cardiac issue during the match between Barcelona and Alaves in October. The Argentinian striker had breathing problems, chest pains, complained about dizziness and was eventually substituted. Aguero was soon admitted to the hospital for tests which told the football world that he was diagnosed with heart arrhythmia. The problem causes improper heartbeats.

Barcelona released a statement following the incident confirming that Aguero will be unavailable for selection for the next three months, with a specialized rehabilitation program set to be undertaken. Initially, the player thought to be positive about his recovery but negative tests and doctor recommendations caused him to think about his decision on his career. Then it was reported he will be announcing his retirement. Only this summer, Sergio Aguero joined the Catalan giants on a free after 10 legendary years at Manchester City. It was expected that 'Kun' will carry forward his legacy from England to rescue Barca from a tough period. Disappointingly such a fine footballer hung up his boots in an unwilling way.

Aguero's career :

It all began when he started with club Independiente at the age of 17, scoring one of his remarkable goals over there. Then Atletico Madrid came calling and he guided the Spanish club to a Europa league honor rattling the back of the net 74 times in 101 appearances. With the national team, he scored 41 goals in 101 caps, reaching a World Cup final and winning the 2021 Copa America final. He won the 2008 Olympic medal in a team that contained Angel Di Maria, Javier Mascherano and a certain Lionel Messi. Additionally, Aguero won the 2005 and 2007 editions of the FIFA U-20 World Cup for Argentina.

But it was with Manchester City that his legacy was inscribed. Since joining the club in the 2011/12 season, Aguero broke numerous records including winning one Golden Boot, seven PL POTM awards and winning the Premier League five times.  In total, he won 15 trophies at City making him a legend for the club. He also reached a Champions League final. Sergio scored the last goal of his career against Real Madrid in a Barcelona shirt in the El Classico on October 24, 2021.

His greatest moment :

His best of playing days came in a Manchester City shirt and the legacy he built over there cannot be erased. Let's take a look back at the five best moments he had in his incredible career at the blue half of Manchester.

1) Dream debut to announce himself

Sergio Aguero came in as the record transfer signing for the club on 28 July 2011 at the region of £35 million. His debut in the Premier League was classic and fitting for a player going to be great. Entering the pitch in the 59th minute against Swansea with the now iconic 'Kun Aguero' shirt, number 16 then, he found the back of the net within nine minutes on the pitch and added to the 4-0 scoreline. He then expertly chipped over the goalkeeper and passed the ball for David Silva to score but the best was yet to come. Aguero rounded off his 30-minute debut with a 30-yard pile driver with his right foot touting it to be one of the greatest Premier League debuts ever.

2) 5 goals vs Newcastle

He became only the fifth player to score five goals in a single game in the Premier League. In 2011, Kun did the trick dismantling Newcastle with a beautiful hat trick, scoring a high five in total. Aguero is also the only player with 12 hat tricks in the Premier League. Goals were indeed his bread and butter.

3) Legacy goalscorer for Man City

City knew they had a lethal goalscorer capable of being the best of best. And so he was. It started with a brace in his debut and went on to become the top goal scorer for the club netting in a staggering 260 goals in all competitions. The Argentinian scored the 178th goal of his City career in the Champions League group game against Napoli back in 2017 to overtake Eric Brook's record, hence becoming the legacy scorer.

4) ) Top foreign striker in the Premier League

It was obvious that this clinical rate of scoring goals will put the striker on a list among world-beaters. And so it did. Aguero scored a plethora of his goals in the Premier League and he is currently the fourth all-time goalscorer with 184 strikes behind only Andrew Cole (187), Wayne Rooney (208) and Alan Shearer (260). However, no foreigner in the league has managed to come closer to his tally other than Thierry Henry (175) putting him at the top of that list. Aguero scored the second goal for Man City in the 5-0 drubbing of Liverpool in 2017 and by so suppressed Dwight Yorke's record to honor him with the achievement.

5) Winning it in the most incredible way

But none of the above milestones will make him pleased then scoring the most important goal of Manchester City's history and creating some unforgettable images that resonate throughout the footballing world. The goal is so lively that it is etched into the fans. '93:20' as the game is dubbed, City needed all three points on the final day of the 2011/12 season to make sure of their first Premier League title but trailed relegation-threatened QPR 2-1 deep into the second half. Substitute Edin Dzeko leveled up the scoreline shortly after coming on but it was not enough as title challengers Manchester United were winning 1-0 at Sunderland in the other fixture at the same time. City needed full points for their goal difference agenda to come into rescue and Aguero delivered that in the time frame, receiving a pass from Balotelli and smacking it past the keeper followed by the iconic shirtless celebration. Premier League title secured and he provided the impact in his first-ever season for the club. Happy Retirement Kun!
