Roberto Martínez announced Portugal’s squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday, 21 May 2024. A solid Portugal team will travel to Germany for the European Championship with the opportunity to land a second title in their history. Losing out to surprise-package Morocco in the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Selecao wish to do far better in the upcoming tournament in a new era led by ex-Belgium coach Roberto Marinez. The responsibility to win another trophy will once again lie on star man Cristiano Ronaldo who is showing no signs of slowing down at the age of 39. Placed in Group F, Portugal will face Czechia, Turkey and Georgia with their Euro 2024 quest beginning against the former on 19 June 2024.
History
Portugal has taken part in eight European Championships before with seven consecutively. Their first appearance came in 1984 when they ended in the semifinals. The Selecao reached the Euro 2004 final hosted on their ground but faced heartbreak by losing to surprise winners Greece. However, they finally found success lifting the Euro title for the first time in 2016 by beating France 1-0 in extra time in Paris. Portugal has always reached the knockout stage of the competition and finished among the top four five times. Footballing legend Cristiano Ronaldo's contribution has been immense since making his debut in Euro 2004 being the all-time top goal-scorer of the tournament with 14 goals. He is also set to make a record sixth appearance in the Euros surpassing Spain’s Iker Casillas.

The Portugal squad provides little surprise as expected players make it to the list. Undoubtedly, the focus will be on their captain Cristiano Ronaldo who is set to break another record by appearing for a sixth Euro Championship. The 39-year-old forward is still scoring for fun returning as the top goalscorer of the Saudi league with 33 strikes in 21 matches and 42 in all competitions. His experience will be required again for a squad filled with youth and players entering their prime. As is Pepe being the oldest player to feature in this edition of the tournament at the age of 41.
