The 11th edition of the National Women's Soccer League is set to kick off on Saturday, 25 March 2023 with the World Cup break to tackle in between. The league is also wishing to see the brighter side of things after numerous cases of abuse and sexual misconduct rocked the 10th anniversary of the competition. A safe environment for the athletes is expected to be in place now.
The league will pause for the Women’s World Cup after the last set of fixtures from 1st to 9th July 2023 before resuming a month after on 18 August 2023. The normal league season ends on 15 October 2023. Each team is scheduled for 22 regular-season games in a home-and-away, double-round-robin format. At the end of the regular season, the team with the highest point total will be awarded the NWSL Shield.
Portland Thorns are the defending champions of the NWSL wishing to win the title again for the fourth time. The 2023 Women’s World Cup in between the league fixtures will be a challenge for the team to meet their objective as several players of the team will travel to Australia and New Zealand for the tournament in July. The same goes for other prime contenders for the league title in current NWSL Shield winners OL Reign and San Diego Wave.
