Head coach of Germany, Julian Nagelsmann announced a 26-player squad list for the UEFA European Championship 2024 on 7th June 2024. Germany is placed in Group A with Hungary, Switzerland and Scotland. The 17th edition of the competition is being hosted by Germany, only the second time for the nation since 1988. Having suffered elimination from the last-16 stage in the previous tournament, Die Mannschaft are willing to do better on their home soil making a record-extending 13th appearance in the finals. Germany is going through a rough patch after exiting from the group stage in consecutive World Cups since their big success in 2014.
History
Germany are the three-time winner of the competition with all of their success coming before this century. Die Mannschaft won the Euros in their debut season in 1972 defeating the Soviet Union 3-0 in the final under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer with Gerd Müller winning the Golden Boot. After finishing runners-up in the next edition, Germany appeared for an unprecedented third consecutive final in 1980 beating Belgium in the final with Klaus Allofs returning as the top scorer. The third honour came in 1996 with the side captained by Jürgen Klinsmann, also the top-scorer for his nation in the competition with five goals. Bastian Schweinsteiger holds the record of playing the most matches for the side in the tournament with 18.
Preparation for Euro 2024
Germany qualified for Euro 2024 by being the hosts. As a reason, the team was engaged in a lot of friendlies over two years following their group stage exit in the World Cup. After a disastrous period under Hansi Flick with only one win in six matches, Julian Nagelsmann took charge of the team although he had a slow start. Germany picked up pace since the turn of the year with three wins and a draw. Nagelsmann hopes the momentum comes to their rescue and pulls them out of the crisis sustained for close to a decade now.
