MBSG vs BFC Match Preview
Mohun Bagan Super Giant began their ISL trophy defence in the desired way by picking up all three points against the promoted side Punjab FC in the opener. Golden Boot winner from last season, Dimitri Petratos was on target again but not before fellow Australian signing Jason Cummings put the Mariners into the lead. The 30-year-old then assisted substitute Manvir Singh for the third in the second half to relive some of the pressure put on the team by their own fault. A poor back pass from midfielder Glan Martins, starting in place of the suspended Anirudh Thapa, was capitalized by I-League top-scorer Luka Majcen to cut off the deficit. Asish Pradhan also had his goal correctly ruled out offside from a free-kick which would have brought Punjab FC level. So, even though the Kolkata giants dominated proceedings and took their chances well, coach Juan Ferrando will hope his side does not lose concentration level in games. Definitely not while facing last season’s finalists whom they beat to take the cup home in Bengaluru FC. It is true without Thapa and not having Hugo Boumous from the start, even though Sahal worked well in the midfield, the trophy holders were not in top gear. With both expected to start on Wednesday, Mohun Bagan wishes to go back to the level that saw them destroy Odisha FC 4-0 in the AFC Cup last week.

While the Green and Maroon had a positive start to the campaign, Bengaluru FC didn’t as they fall to a 2-1 loss to Kerala Blasters in a game full of narratives from the past league meeting. Both goals were Blues’s own doings as they went down from Keziah Veendrop’s own goal in the 52nd minute from a corner and the misery doubled when Gurpreet Singh howler’s led Adrian Luna slot the ball into an empty net. Simon Grayson’s side had little to show for in the attacking phase with Blasters troubling their defence more. They were able to find the back of the net from their rival’s mistake with Curtis Main scoring on his debut off the bench. It was too little too late as the Tuskers took revenge for the events back in March. Bengaluru FC had a hard opening in the form of rivalry that too in opposition’s ground and which was boiling for months. Now they travel again to face the ISL champions in a tough challenge. The Blues were beaten in that final on penalties by Mohun Bagan after they defeated them earlier in Salt Lake and for the first time in ISL. The head coach will tell his boys to try and turn their fortunes around in last season’s final rematch amid a rousing atmosphere in Kolkata.
