Australia, minus all-time top scorer Sam Kerr due to her ACL injury, will not want to face such a scenario again as they hope to build on their historic fourth-place finish in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Head coach Tony Gustavsson is leading the same group of players to make a difference in their fifth Olympic appearance with some new faces added to charge up the side. The Matildas narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the last edition which was the best showing in their Olympic history. Repeating the same will be difficult with a tough group stage to manage but the team has yielded results in Kerr’s absence in the Women’s World Cup. Australia also had an excellent qualifying campaign, winning every game without conceding a single goal.
