ENG vs FIN Match Preview
England showed a different character under Lee Carsley with the team showing a lot more attacking intent than the Gareth Southgate era as they picked up a 2-0 win over rivals Ireland at Dublin in their Nations League opener. Two former U-21 internationals for Ireland, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish scored in the victory for the Three Lions but the team could have added more to their tally with their positive style of play. Although the Boys in Green was struggling for form before the game, the change of attitude from England by reframing from sitting back with a lead in hand under new management also cannot be ignored. Carsley’s side are confident of maintaining their momentum as they travel back to Wembley to face another struggling outfit Finland on Tuesday evening. Taking six points from the first two games of League B will give them an early advantage to secure promotion to the top tier.
Having failed to get into consecutive Euros after making history in 2016, Finland’s disappointment continued as they were thrashed by Greece 3-0 in their Nations League opener. The defeat was compounded by striker Benjamin Kallman putting the ball into his own net leaving the side without a win since March this year. Suffering a demoralising defeat before facing the Euro finalists England makes the road tougher for Eagle-owls to fight for promotion. The top-placed side from each group in League B will gain direct promotion to League A while the runners-up enter the playoffs but with Greece and Ireland both looking eager aside from the Three Lions, Finland fears relegation. Winning their trip to Wembley seems too much at the moment, having not won this fixture in their history, picking up a point against the opponent that has not won a Nations League game at home since 2020 looks viable.
