CFC vs EBFC Match Preview
Just as Chennaiyin FC thought they were recovering from an early season slump with back-to-back wins over Hyderabad FC and Punjab FC, the 3-0 defeat against FC Goa before the international break gave them a harsh reality check. The lack of clinical edge to their attack and slumber defence was exposed again as the Marina Machans conceded their fourth defeat of the campaign in just six games. Still, Owen Coyle’s team are just two points away from entering the top six of the ISL table and matching the points of NorthEast United who has been the opposite side of form. Despite the huge defeat at home, Chennaiyin FC will have the backing from the fans to change their fortunes around with East Bengal the visitors this time. Having not lost a single game in this meeting, winning twice and drawing the other four, the two-time ISL winners will be optimistic to start a good run from here.
East Bengal is experiencing yet another season where their hopes of a decent return are soon fading away. At least the start of it had got many fans disappointed who hoped for a different outcome with a former ISL winner Carles Cuadrat now at their helm. The Red and Gold have managed just a win in five matches so far and lost in their last three, languishing in a low 10th spot once again with just four points collected. The 2-1 defeat to Kerala Blasters at home in the last match was dramatic at the end but they had to leave the field empty-handed once again. Cleiton Silva’s penalty to equalise things was saved, even at the second attempt and skiing the rebound, while scoring from the second spot-kick at the death did not do the Brazilian and his team any favour. Cuadrat’s men will have to change things sooner than later to stay in contention for playoffs but a difficult trip awaits.
CFC vs EBFC Team News
Left-back Aakash Sangwan will remain unavailable for Chennaiyin FC with Sachu Siby continuing in his place. Winger Ninthoi Meitei is back in the squad but Connor Shields remains a doubt for the game on Saturday. Coyle will be tempted to make a few other changes to the eleven that started in the defeat to Goa. Meanwhile, East Bengal will have a fully fit squad available apart from Borja Herrera who is a doubt with an injury.
