The 24-year-old English triathlete Alex Yee started the medal tally in the Commonwealth Games 2022 (Birmingham 2022) by winning gold for the hosts in the men’s triathlon.
Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Alex Yee was the fastest to finish the men’s triathlon in Birmingham 2022 as he completed it in 50 minutes and 34 seconds.
Alex Yee won CWG 2022 gold medal after Hayden Wilde’s 10-second penalty
Yee finished in the 16th position in the first event swimming (8 minutes and 49 seconds) as he had 15 seconds deficit from the first positioned New Zealander Tayler Reid (8 minutes and 34 seconds). Later, he completed the bike race (road bicycling) in 26 minutes and 7 seconds, and he finished the run (road running) in only 14 minutes and 31 seconds to win the gold medal.
Though the second-ranked men’s triathlete New Zealander Hayden Wilde, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist, was running in front to win the gold medal, he received a 10-second penalty (for an infringement with his bike helmet in T2) that led him to allow Yee to complete that race before him. With a 10-second penalty count, the 24-year-old Wilde completed that triathlon in 50 minutes and 47 seconds to secure the silver medal.
The 24-year-old Australian Matthew Hauser won the bronze medal after completing the triathlon in 50 minutes and 50 seconds.
Tayler Reid’s disappointing finish
Tayler Reid finished the first two events in the fastest way as he completed swimming in 8 minutes and 34 seconds and the bike race in 25 minutes and 59 seconds. However, he took 15 minutes and 57 seconds to complete the run as he ultimately took 51 minutes and 45 seconds to complete the triathlon. He finally managed eighth place in that men’s triathlon.
Indian triathletes
Two Indians also participated in the men’s triathlon. While the 30th place Adarsh Muralidharan Nair Sinimol finished it in 1 hour and 38 seconds, the 33rd-positioned Vishwanath Yadav took 2 minutes and 14 seconds more than Adarsh to complete it (1 hour 2 minutes and 52 seconds).
