Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of those tournaments which tried to become the bridge between the domestic and the International stage since it’s beginning in 2008. The players who play in the domestic level and doesn’t get the chance in the national team, they also get the chance to rub the shoulder with the International players because of this tournament.
Despite the controversy of spot-fixing in 2013, the tournament remains as much popular as it was earlier and throws the limelight on the youngsters. IPL has given us many players – be it Indian or International; who came into limelight after playing in the tournament. Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Jaspreet Bumrah, Krunal Pandya, Yazuvendra Chahal, Yusuf Pathan, Sunil Narine, Shaun Marsh, Kieron Pollard etc. They have been doing wonders for their respective sides now.
However, IPL doesn’t mean success only. There are a few players who have failed miserably in the International stages after having a successful IPL career.
Mohit Sharma
Mohit Sharma has been a part of the franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing IPL. He has been brought in the auction by INR 5 Crore. However, he came into limelight in 2013 during his stint with Chennai.
He scalped 20 wickets in the season and on the back of strong performance, he made his debut in the national team in the same year. He even won the Purple Cap in 2014, picking up 23 wickets and became a known face for his slower deliveries.
He played his first International game on August 1, 2013, against Zimbabwe while his T20I debut was against Australia in 2014. In 26 One Day Internationals, Mohit Sharma bagged 31 wickets at an average of 32.90 and in 8 Twenty20 Internationals he picked up 6 wickets at an average of 30.83. Apart from the 2015 World Cup, He had a rather forgettable International career.
His inconsistency cost him his place in the national team and within two years of debut, he found himself out of the team.
Stuart Binny
Stuart Binny had been a consistent player for Rajasthan Royals franchise until 2015. He had a great year with Rajasthan in 2013 where he scored 293 runs in 17 matches with the strike rate of 147.23 and picked up 6 wickets with an economy of 6.75.
Everyone found an all-rounder in Binny and on the back of his IPL performance, he made his Test and ODI debut in 2014 and T20I debut in 2015. His career-best performance was a six-wicket haul against Bangladesh. Apart from the game, he took 14 wickets in 14 ODIs; which came at an average of 21.95 and he has 205 ODI runs with an average of 28.75.
In 6 Test matches, he took only 3 wickets and scored 194 runs and in the 3 T20Is he had played, he scored 35 runs and took 1 wicket at an average of 54. Though he was given many chances to perform, he failed to grab the chances and slowly found himself out of the national team as well.
Chris Lynn
Chris Lynn is known for his big hitting and has been a core member of Kolkata Knight Riders for the last couple of years. He has played many memorable knocks for Kolkata and several times they were for winning causes. Along with his bat, he is a brilliant fielder also and took a stunner to dismiss AB de Villiers a couple of years ago. His catch brought him into the spotlight.
However, like many other players, on the back of a successful IPL season, he got his maiden call-up, but failed to cement his place in the playing XI. He has so far played 4 ODIs and 18 T20Is for Australia where he scored 75 and 291 runs respectively. Though, the 29-year old has a strike rate of more than 130 in T20Is, his place still not sure in the squad.
Albie Morkel
South Africa player Albie Morkel was known for his all-round ability. He could not only hit big shots but also was able to take wickets in crucial times. He had played 91 IPL matches for various IPL franchise. However, his stint with Chennai Super Kings was the biggest. In the 2010 IPL season, he made a record third-wicket partnership with Murali Vijay against the Rajasthan Royals. In 2012, he was the winner of the Super Sixes tournament, while covering a distance of 105m. He has scored at an average of more than 24 with a strike rate of nearly 142, while taking 85 wickets as well.
However, his International graph was totally different from the IPL. He played 1 Test match, 58 ODIs and 50 T20Is for the country where he scored 58, 782 and 572 runs respectively while taking 1, 50 and 26 wickets respectively. Having made his debut in ODI in 2004, he last played for his country in 2015. In January 2019, he announced his retirement from the all forms of cricket.
Sohail Tanvir
Sohail Tanvir was featured in the first edition of PL in 2008 and became the best bowler in the tournament. He played 11 games for Rajasthan Royals and had 22 scalps at an average of 12.09 with an economy of 6.46. He took a six-wicket haul, conceding 14 runs which was a record until last year. However, Alzarri Joseph broke the record by taking a six-wicket haul while giving away 12 runs only.
Pakistan had a lot of hope from this left-arm pacer. Though, he performed well in the beginning, his inconsistency and losing focus from the game cost him his place in the team.
