Shubman Gill - Youngest ODI Double-Centurion; Fastest Indian To Reach 1000 ODI Runs

Indian cricketer Shubman Gill just joined the club of ODI double-centurions after the young right-handed batter scored his maiden ODI double-hundred against New Zealand at Hyderabad on Wednesday (18th January).

It was the three-match ODI series opener between the hosts India and the visitors New Zealand. After the Indian captain Rohit Sharma chose to bat first, the 23-year-old opener Shubman Gill played a massive role in the batting to set up the close match-winning total for the Men in Blue.

While the other Indian batters were failing to perform strongly, Gill was not only the unshakable player of the batting line-up, but he was also moving the scoreboard quickly. After scoring his third ODI century, he became merciless on the bowlers and completed the double-century in 145 balls.

Before the right-handed opening batter was dismissed by Henry Shipley in the final over of that innings, he scored 208 runs in 149 balls with the help of 19 fours and nine sixes. India ultimately scored 349/8 in 50 overs.

Shubman Gill’s ODI Double-century stats

(Youngest)

• At the age of 23 years and 132 days, Gill became the youngest to score an ODI double-century. Ishan Kishan was the previous record holder in this list as the Indian left-handed batter hit his maiden ODI 200 just a month ago at the age of 24 years and 145 days.

(4th Fastest)

• While Gill completed a double-century in 145 balls, he became the fourth fastest cricketer to complete an ODI double century.

(First ODI 200 vs New Zealand)

• It was the first ODI double-century against New Zealand. The previous record of the highest individual ODI score against the Blackcaps was 186 not out by the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar at Hyderabad (Deccan) on 8th November 1999.

(5th Indian)

• Shubman Gill became the fifth Indian to hit an ODI double-century. Sachin Tendulkar (once), Virender Sehwag (once), Rohit Sharma (thrice) and Ishan Kishan (once) were the other four Indians who achieved this feat before Gill.

(8th overall batter)

• In the meantime, Gill also became the eighth cricketer to smash an ODI double-century. Apart from the five Indians, the other three non-Indians on this list are Chris Gayle (West Indies), Martin Guptill (New Zealand) and Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan).

• It was the tenth ODI double-century.

Shubman Gill: 1000 ODI runs in 19 innings

While it was his 19th ODI innings, Gill also completed 1000 ODI runs. At the end of that innings, the young right-handed batter scored 1102 runs with an average of 68.87 and a strike rate of 109.00. Here are a few crucial stats of this special beginning milestone.

• Fastest Indian to complete 1000 ODI runs. Previously, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan jointly held that record as both Indians reached their 1000 ODI runs milestone in 24 innings. 

• Joint second fastest to complete 1000 ODI runs along with Pakistan cricketer Imam-ul-Haq, who also took 19 innings to reach this feat. Another Pakistan batter Fakhar Zaman is the record-holder in this list as he completed 1000 ODI runs in 18 innings.  

New Zealand: 337 in 49.2 overs

In reply, the visitors lost the wickets regularly, and they were once struggling at 131/6 in 28.4 overs. Then Michael Bracewell stunned with his incredible aggressive batting performance, while Mitchell Santner provided the perfect support to him. They had an outstanding 162-run partnership for the seventh wicket as the hosts were in serious danger of losing the game.

Even after breaking that partnership with the dismissal of Santner (57 off 45 balls), Bracewell was almost single-handedly carrying that innings, but his incredible batting just failed to secure one of the greatest ODI wins in history. While Bracewell scored 140 off only 78 balls (12 fours and 10 sixes), the Blackcaps were all out on 337 runs in 49.2 overs.
