Australian Adam Zampa Equals The ODI Record For Most Runs Conceded In An Innings

While the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is less than a month to go, the prime Aussie spinner, leggie Adam Zampa experienced a horrific day in an ODI against the hosts South Africa. The 31-year-old leg-spinner Zampa equalled the record for most conceding runs in an ODI innings.

It was the crucial fourth game of the five-match ODI series between South Africa and Australia, which was a must-win game for the hosts South Africa to stay alive in the series. After Australia sent the Proteas to bat first, the middle-order batters Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller’s powerful batting helped the hosts to manage a giant first innings ODI total.

While Klaasen scored 174 runs in just 83 balls with the help of 13 fours and 13 sixes, Miller remained not out for 82 runs in 45 balls (six fours and five sixes). They had a giant 222-run partnership for the fifth wicket as South Africa scored 416/5 in 50 overs.

In reply, Australia were all out for 252 runs in 34.5 overs. South Africa won that game by 164 runs and leveled the series by 2-2 with one match to go.

Most runs conceded in an ODI innings: Adam Zampa equalled Mick Lewis' record

During the first innings of the match, Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa finished with bowling figures of 10-0-113-0. It was the new expensive ODI bowling figures record by a spinner, as Zampa broke Afghan leggie Rashid Khan’s previous record of 9-0-110-0 (vs England at Nottingham on August 30, 2016).

Meanwhile, Zampa’s latest ODI bowling figures also equalled the record for most runs conceded in an ODI innings. During the historic 2006 Johannesburg ODI, where South Africa successfully chased 435 runs in the final over to win the home ODI series against Australia, the right-arm Aussie pacer Mick Lewis finished with the bowling figures of 10-0-113-0.

But unlike the inexperienced Mick Lewis, Zampa is a very important bowler for Australia in the limited-overs formats. Since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Zampa has recorded the most ODI wickets for Australia by picking up 71 wickets in 34 innings.
