Alick Athanaze Equals Fastest Fifty Record On ODI Debut

While West Indies completed a whitewash in the three-match ODI series against the hosts UAE, the 24-year-old Caribbean cricketer Alick Athanaze equalled the record for the fastest fifty on the ODI debut.

Already trailing the series by 2-0, the hosts UAE chose to bat first after winning the toss. Though the hosts had some solid and fast partnerships for the second and third wickets, they were bowled out for only 184 runs in 36.1 overs. While Vriitya Aravind scored 70 runs off 75 balls, opener and skipper Muhammad Waseem smashed 42 runs in 34 balls.

The Caribbean right-arm off-spinner Kevin Sinclair bagged four wickets to destroy the UAE batting line-up. He had bowling figures of 7.1-0-24-4.

Alick Athanaze: Completed half-century in 26 balls

In reply, West Indies chased the target in 35.1 overs after losing six wickets. ODI debutant Alick Athanaze provided a firing start with the bat by scoring a 26-ball half-century. The left-handed opening batter scored 65 runs off 45 balls (nine fours and three sixes) before losing his wicket in the 15th over.

Also, Shamarh Brooks (39), Keacy Carty (20) and Roston Chase (27) had some crucial contributions to that successful ODI chase.

Fastest fifty on ODI debut: Alick Athanaze equalled Krunal Pandya’s record

Indian cricketer Krunal Pandya was the previous lone record holder for the fastest half-century on the ODI debut. On March 23, 2021, the ODI debutant Krunal recorded a 26-ball fifty against England at Pune. Now, Athanaze has equalled this record.
