Yesterday was a great day for Indian sport as our Athletes got medals in 4 different sports and 2 of them were Gold and 2 Silver Medals. It was exhilarating to watch so many top sports stars at their best and 1 sport got instant fame and the athletes got their well earned recognition by all Indians. There was 1 achievement out of the 4 which got me teary eyed and that does not happen a lot and we will talk about all of them below.
Without wasting any more time let’s talk about the 4 medals that we won yesterday and celebrate these outstanding athletes.
Gold Medal in Lawn Bowls
This is 1 medal that no Indian saw coming and this is the Gold Medal that brought me to tears and hearing the National anthem play for a sport where we are winning a medal for the first time was special. Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirket, Nayanimoni Saikia and Pinki , These 4 wimen who are mothers, serve our nation outside of this sort k st taught India about Lawn Bowls in the past 2 days and I must tell you that seeing their match vs South Africa yesterday was so much tension but after 15 ends when they won 17-10 and all the emotions came out, it was a mind-boggling moment in Indian sports. This is something akin to Neeraj Chopra winning the Javelin Gold Medal at the Olympics last year.
Gold Medal in Men’s Team Table Tennis
Our second Gold Medal of the day cane from tennis where our boys defended their crown and in style. They were facing Singapore and India beat them 3-1. First the doubles pair of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai won their match in 3 games, then Sathiyan Gnanasekaran won his singles match and finally Harmeet Desai won his match to give India back to back Gold In Table Tennis team event. You 4 have made all of us proud and all the best to each one of you as well as every member of the Women’s team for the singles and doubles events coming up and hopefully a lot more medals from table tennis.
Silver Medal in Weightlifting – Vikas Thakur
Our 3rd medal of the day came from Vikas Thakur who won the silver medal for India in the 96 Kg weight category and he was fired up for the event and was in top form in both the Snatch and Clean and Jerk sections of the competition. In the snatch Vikas lifted a best of 155 Kgs and in the Clean and Jerk Vikas lifted 191 kgs to give him a total of 346 kgs to win the silver medal and his 3rd Commonwealth Games medal. It was impressive to see his focus and determination to get the Medal.
Silver Medal in Badminton Mixed Team
This is the only event where we can say that India did not win the Gold Medal as they were strong contenders being the defending champions but a silver medal is amazing as well. PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikkanth, Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Tressa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand played so well to win this silver and hope that in the singles and doubles coming up that India wins medal in each of the categories and gets a great medal haul from badminton.
