Qatar’s embarrassing record as the host nation of the FIFA World Cup 2022 is heavily increasing with time progress. While they became the first World Cup hosts to suffer two defeats in the group stage (considering only the first round group stage of the competition), they also became the first hosts two get knocked out from the WC tournament after the first two group stage matches.
Qatar started this FIFA World Cup 2022 with a 2-0 defeat against Ecuador. It was the first time when the World Cup hosts lost their tournament opener.
Mohammed Muntari created World Cup history for Qatar
In their next Group A game against Senegal, the hosts suffered another 3-1 defeat. Though Mohammed Muntari (78’) created history for Qatar to score their first-ever World Cup goal, Boulaye Dia’s first-half goal (41’), and Famara Diédhiou (48’) and Bamba Dieng’s (84’) second-half goals never put the hosts to the comfortable position in that game.
Qatar’s unwanted World Cup records
With that defeat, Qatar were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2022 despite still having one match left in this group (vs Netherlands on 25th November). In the entire group stage era of the FIFA World Cup, it is the earliest for the hosts to get eliminated from a FIFA World Cup tournament.
Though South Africa was the first and only team, before Qatar 2022, to get knocked out from the WC tournament from the group stage (considering only the first round group stage of the competition), they were eliminated after the third round of the group stage.
Also, Qatar became the first World Cup hosts to suffer two defeats in the group stage of the tournament (considering only the first round group stage of the competition).
